Hastings, Round I, 5 August 1895 (French Defence). Steinitz meets Vergani's French and, after a premature exchange in the centre, builds a King's-side pawn storm that yields a tremendous attack, the veteran champion pursuing it with characteristic vigour to victory. Notes by H. N. Pillsbury.
6…cxd4A premature exchange. Black obtains a very good game by Q to Kt 3; 7. P to K B 4, Q Kt to B 3; 8. Kt to B 3, P to K B 3; in fact, White seems unable to develop his game so as to obtain any attack.
8…Bb4+B to K 2 was preferable.
16.g4This powerful advance gives White a tremendous attack.
18.h4Pursuing the attack with precision and vigour.
