Morphy against Medley, London 1858 — the second of the casual series, an Allgaier Gambit. Morphy's quiet 10. Kt. to K's 2nd conceals a deep design, and White's victory is consummated in excellent style. Notes by Löwenthal.
9.Nc3A novelty, and one that deserves consideration.
9…Bf5Here, perhaps, Kt. to Kt's 6th might have been played with advantage.
10.Ne2This, at first sight, would appear an insignificant move, and made merely with the object of attacking the advanced Pawn; as the game progresses, however, it will be seen that Mr. Morphy had a deeper design in view.
11…Ng3Better to have exchanged Knights.
13…Bb4+Q. to Kt's 2nd would have been better, but the game was past all recovery.
16.Rxf5This is all remarkably well played, and is the more admirable since it is evident that Mr. M. must have seen through the whole of the variations when he played his Kt. to K's 2nd.
23.Bxc6+White's victory is consummated in most excellent style.
